Spinal Life Australia welcomes the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) Review and its final reform recommendations.
These findings are vital for all Australians to create a safer and more equitable environment for people with disability and their families and carers – particularly following on from the Disability Royal Commission.
CEO Mark Townend says Spinal Life Australia supports all efforts to improve the safety and wellbeing of people with disability and place them at the centre of decision making wherever possible.
“With many of Spinal Life Australia’s clients as participants of the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS), we’re particularly delighted to see the report’s quality and proposed safeguards to improve accessibility, ensure its adequacy and prioritise delivering value to its participants at both an individual and societal level,” Mark says.
“Spinal Life Australia is also pleased that these reform recommendations align with our continual dedication to ensuring those living with disability are at the centre of decision-making.
“In particular, to contribute to the advancement of equality for all Australians, Spinal Life Australia strongly support the recommendation for the Australian Government to implement legislative change to allow participants once they turn 65 to receive supports in both the NDIS and the aged care system concurrently and clarify when aged care supports are reasonable and necessary. It is imperative that we strive for equitable treatment, discouraging any form of ageism and promoting a society where everyone is treated with equal consideration.
“We hope the 26 recommendations and 139 integrated actions create a strong conduit of advocacy and inclusivity for those within the NDIS system, and further supports our mission of advocating for strong, foundational support for the millions of Australians who live with disability, as well as for their families and carers.
“We trust that the Independent Review Panel’s findings will provide great support and care to people with disability.”
