So, what is a Personal Support Worker? They are individuals who provide essential support in various community services. They are an empathetic and reliable person who play a vital role in supporting our clients to live life their way. Some of the ways Personal Support Workers do this is by providing a wide range of services, including light housework, domestic duties, personal care, grooming and getting out and about in the community.
What you’ll be doing
Although no day is the same in this role, there are some key functions you’ll be doing to support our clients to live independent and fulfilling lives. Some of these duties include:
- Transferring in and out of bed or wheelchairs. Using hoists when required
- Toileting, bladder and bowel management – including changing catheter bags and supporting bowel care.
- Showering, bathing, dressing and dental hygiene
- Personal grooming
- Checking for pressure areas and basic wound care
- Assisting with medication
- Meal preparation and eating including PEG feeding
- Domestic support such as general household cleaning and laundry
- Community access such as driving to appointments and social activities

Attributes
We encourage you to apply if you are:
- Seeking casual employment of about 20 hours per week and available to work broken shifts consisting of several hours across early morning, lunchtime and early evenings most days
- Enjoy an active job as you must be physically capable of constant lifting, bending, carrying, crouching and working in confined spaces as these tasks are essential to the role
- A genuine, reliable worker with inherent integrity and respect for individua choice and client confidentiality
- Sensitive and adaptable to clients’ different personalities, cultural backgrounds, family/house dynamics and changing support needs
- Resilient in managing challenging behaviour and perform under pressure
- Comfortable in assisting with personal hygiene functions
- Able to follow instructions, make basic calculations, comprehend support plans and communicate clearly and professionally with both clients and staff
- Must have valid Australian work rights, current and valid driver’s licence, access to a reliable vehicle and criminal history clearance
How do I prepare for a personal support worker interview?
Preparing for a personal support worker interview involves understanding the role, the tasks, and the duties you’ll be expected to carry out. This role is incredibly rewarding as you assist people in improving their quality of life through personal care and companionship. Familiarise yourself with the NDIS and the daily tasks support workers provide assistance with for individuals with disabilities. It would be an advantage for you to already hold a Certificate III in Individual Support or equivalent, which is essential in Australia’s disability care sector. While extensive experience isn’t necessary, a genuine passion for working in disability will help boost your confidence. Be ready to discuss your role as a personal support worker and how you can make a meaningful difference in people’s lives.
Lastly, ensure you’ve completed the NDIS Worker Screening Check. Highlight your strong desire to work in this field, demonstrating your commitment to providing emotional support and practical assistance to those in need.
